School Holidays

School term dates will be issued each year, to help you plan ahead. On five occasions during each academic year, the school will be closed to children, whilst the staff engage in Professional Training. We will notify you, well in advance, of any closures. School term dates for 2009-2010 can be found on the following page.

Absence during term time

We expect all pupils to attend school regularly. There are strict regulations for marking registers and schools are required to show if an absence is authorised or unauthorised. The school takes a dim view of absence for occasional days out. Forms, requesting permission for ‘Leave of Absence’ are available from the school office for those parents who are forced to take their annual leave during term time. This period should NOT exceed two weeks in any academic year. All requests for leave of absence must be made to the Headteacher in advance.

Health Matters

School Medicals

Parents are invited to complete a confidential questionnaire, meet the school nurse, and attend School Medical examinations.

Allergies and other Medical Conditions

It is vital that we have an up-to-date list of children with allergies and specific medical conditions, in order that we may know how best to care for the children during school hours. Please, ensure you keep the school informed of any specific matter that affects your child. Thank you.

Illness at School

If your child has a minor cut or graze, we will provide the necessary treatment at school. If, however, your child sustains a more serious injury, every effort will be make to contact you, the parents. Please, always keep us informed of any change of address or telephone number at home or work. We ask that you complete a contact form, which includes the name, address and telephone number of a neighbour or relation whom we may contact if your child feels unwell, should we be unable to contact you personally.

Pastoral care

We aim to foster a happy and caring environment for all our children, where respect and consideration for others is encouraged.

The few rules we have are designed for the safety and welfare of the school community. If a child misbehaves, the misdemeanour will be dealt with in school by the class teacher, senior teacher or Headteacher, generally by way of talking to the child. Behaviour problems which we consider to be serious and persistent will be dealt with in consultation with parents.

It is so important that parents and teachers work closely together, for the benefit of the children. Should you wish to discuss any matter concerning your child or the life of the school, please do not hesitate to contact the Headteacher or your child’s class teacher at any reasonable time. Brief informal meetings are often most helpful, if however a more detailed discussion is needed, please make an appointment. Class teachers are usually available for consultation at 3 o’clock each afternoon.

Corporal punishment is not used by any member of staff.

Assessment Procedures

Assessment forms an integral part of the curriculum. Teacher assessment takes place throughout your child’s school career. Foundation Profiles are completed with reception aged children, whilst Teacher Assessment is on-going. Written reports are made at the end of each academic year, reporting progress and attainment. Towards the end of their time at infant school, children are assessed using national assessment tests and ‘tasks’. End of Key Stage attainment is then reported to parents in a written report. The report will be discussed during a consultation evening. Parents are welcome to read their child’s records, by appointment, with your child’s class teacher, or the Headteacher.

National Curriculum Assessments

The National Curriculum has been designed to set clear education targets and provide a national framework in which children’s performance can be measured and assessed.

At the end of Key Stage 1 (Infant School), formal assessments are based on a combination of teacher assessments and tests. Teacher assessments and test results are equally important. However, they may differ. Teacher assessment covers the whole of a subject area, but tests indicate a child’s performance in selected areas of a subject, on one particular day.
Teacher Assessments will be reported to parents of children in Year Two with their child’s written report.

It is hoped that children will reach Level 2 by the end of Key Stage 1 (Infant School). Seven year old children who achieve Level 1 or below are performing less well than expected for their age. However, some children at Level 1 may have just missed achieving Level 2 and are therefore close to the attainment expected of a seven year old. Children who achieve Level 3 are exceeding what is expected of a seven year old. Along with the formal assessment results the end of year written report will give you an indication of how well your child is progressing.

The next page charts our most recent National Curriculum Assessment results for both teacher assessments and tests. The results are expressed in percentage terms. The chart also shows national results for the previous academic year.

You will have the opportunity to find out more about assessment procedures when your child starts
school.

How you can help us to help your child

We welcome an active involvement of parents in the life of our school. A number of activities and events are organised for both parents and children each term. You will be kept informed through regular newsletters. We are always eager to learn of new ideas for involving parents and the community in the busy life of Badshot Lea Village Infant School. If you would like to be involved with the school please talk to your child’s class teacher. However, we understand that for may reasons parents may not be in a position to help in school and we would not wish you to feel obliged to volunteer your services.

We hope that you will feel able to contact the school at any time should you wish to discuss aspects of your child’s school life. Regular contact between parents and school can be of great benefit to both the parents and school. Should you wish to seek advice or discuss any concerns please contact either your child’s class teacher or the Headteacher to arrange an appointment. During the year, three Consultation Evenings are arranged – one each term. For the Autumn Term you will be invited to meet your child’s class teacher to discuss how your child has settled and how you can best support your child with school life. During the Spring and Summer Term Consultation Evenings, you will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress in more detail.

On occasions a member of the teaching staff may invite you into school to discuss a specific problem. In certain circumstances, for the benefit of your child, we may enlist additional support. Children develop at very different rates and in some instances we are able to help those children who might benefit from individual or small group teaching situations. We will always keep you informed.

Throughout your child’s school career, records will be maintained concerning your child’s progress, development and achievements. Your child’s records are open for you to see. May we suggest that you make an appointment with the class teacher, or Headteacher, should you wish to view your child’s records.

At the end of each school year you will receive a written report about your child, which will form the basis of discussion concerning your child’s progress at the final Consultation Evening for the academic year.
